Print game magazines did it for years before the internet, and reviews tended to always look at similar criteria, even among different reviewers. In newspapers and other types of print material, and even more respectable news media websites, they are able to have multiple reviewers have reviews held to the same standard. The associated press still supplies reviews from multiple reviewers, but also maintain a level of editorial standard so just some random dude calling himself a journalist can't go around publishing his wares. What places like IGN do is more akin to contributor site. Forbes is a good example of this, and it's why their content is all over the place, and generally isn't as good. IGN has it's own staff, but without standards, they may as well be contributors. You say, and have said elsewhere that it's impossible to remove the subjective, but you ignore the context of what's actually being said. It is possible to have an objective review, set to a standard. It was common before the internet became a thing. It's still practiced in some places today. It's rarely ever seen in the gaming press nowadays. One site that comes to mind is The Escapist. Maybe they've changed in recent years as I haven't been there in a while, but they actually do have standards for reviews, and all their journalistic pieces. Trash reviews which ignored the scope or what the game was supposed to be didn't come around that often.įor individuals, Angry Joe is great at doing objective reviews, where he uses his subjective opinion, but he seems to have a good understanding of what the intended audience is, and what they may expect the game to be. ![]() It's not really about scores it's about how you can have one person say a game needs to innovate while another gets a free pass Because of how he does his reviews, even if you disagree with him, at least he backs up his subjective opinion with objective analysis.
